Our History

S & J Irvine Funeral Directors (Irvines) was established in 1975 by Samuel Irvine better known to most as Uel, serving the local communities for 47 years.  Uel had an unassuming, kind and quiet demeanour and went about his business in a quiet manner – never one to seek centre stage – he won the affection of many families over the years who called on his services time and time again.

A Life's Work

It has been said that working with the deceased and bereaved is a ‘vocation’ or a calling and for Uel this was very true. Undertaking (as it was better known as then) was Uel’s life’s work, he and wife Dorothy made many personal sacrifices to be available 24 hours a day 365 days a year to those families who sought his services and help.  Over the 47 years he served hundreds of families and his tireless commitment to be there for others is something he will be remembered for. Uel passed away in October 2022 after a short illness, continuing to work right up until his ill health stopped him.

Many people have reminisced about his years serving others and many have told stories of how he helped them quietly when times were hard, leaving himself at a loss financially on many occasions preferring to be content in the knowledge that he had helped a family out who were struggling.  His acts of genuine kindness and support did not go unnoticed and haven't been forgotten.

A Dedicated Team

Uel poured his time, skill and effort into building the business to what it has become today.  His wishes were for his son Samuel James (James) to continue in the business as owner and Funeral Director with help from his sister Rachel and their dedicated team of staff.  Having grown up in a family business providing 24-hour service all members of the family appreciate the dedication and responsibility there is in caring for grieving families and the deceased.

Future Plans

Work has already begun with the investment of upgrading the premises on both sites, James has many plans for the business which will be of great benefit and comfort to those families that call on his assistance.  Having the skills, experience and a supportive nature James carries out the role of Funeral Director with ease and confidence, which families quickly recognise, knowing he has everything taken care of, allows them to rest easy in that knowledge and have the room to grieve in those initial difficult days.

Throughout, we provide comfort, support and professional guidance at every step of the way.

Uel, Rachel. James and all the staff at Irvines We the family of the late Sadie Magee would like to thank you all for your support, kindness and guidance in carrying out the funeral arrangements in such a caring, dignified and professional manner, which we appreciated greatly.
